As I draw the curtains of my bedroom
window and looked outside, once again I am mesmerized by the majestic beauty of
the Arabian Sea. The sea is both, wild and calm, dangerous and beautiful. The
words of a beautiful poem by Sherry
Little filled my thoughts
Colors of the sky
Roaring of the sea
Walking in the wet sand
With my hair blowing in the breeze
I am among those lucky people who live in this beautiful city called KARACHI. There is nothing I can say or write about this city which has not been written before. This city is the heartbeat of Pakistan. It is diversity personified.
This beautiful city dates back when a
few fisher men from the Baloch tribe developed a small community in this area.
Their survival and livelihood was dependent on the sea.
Over the course of many years, this
city has transformed tremendously. Today we see Karachi as one of the most
densely populated metropolis in the country. Karachi is more than what meets
the eye. From the ancient buildings of the ‘free masons’ to the ‘Zoroastrian
temples’, Karachi has had a diverse and glorified past. Comparing the past and
the present of Karachi is not easy as the city has grown with supersonic speed,
although, one thing has remained constant about this city, that is, its ability
to accommodate whoever comes to it. Today we see a mix of so many different
ethnicities and subcultures living in harmony by the beautiful Arabian Sea.
Karachi is the epitome of religious
diversity. Predominantly, a city with Muslim population, Karachi has
beautiful Mosques. This city also has pagan temples and
churches. Karachi has an art galleries, a theater and many beautiful parks with lush green trees. There are crowded markets
and open air bazaars, for many to shop and also earn a respectable living. This beautiful
city is also home for many who came to find refuge from across the border.
Food HUB
It would be unjust to write about
Karachi without mentioning the feasts this city offers. From being the Nihari
Hub of the country, to 'Charsi tikka', 'Balouchi Sajji' and many cuisines
from other provinces, easily available in Karachi. The city offers many
treats for the tantalizing taste buds.
Karachi also has a sweet tooth; there
is a wide variety of mouth watering goodies that can give a quick sugar rush.
From piping hot Jalebis to innumerable mithais and halwas along with Dohrajees
famous GolaGanda (snow cone), are available for the food lovers. If you are
looking for a Dopamine fix through sugar then Karachi’s sweet treats are for
you.
Fusion
Fashion
This astounding city is very quick in
adopting the cultures from foreign lands. Fast food and fashion from across the
globe have found safe haven in Karachi.
The fashion fusion of eastern and
western wear is a symbol of the openness of this city and its people. From Jeans
with Kurtas, to colorful western tops with Patyala shalwars are all a part of
the various styles this city offers.
Traffic
chaos
Karachi is incomplete without its
traffic. The sea of motorcycles, rickshaws and colorful buses complete the
madness of this city.
The famous truck art that is a specialty of
Karachi has made its way on the ramps of Paris and Milan. Karachi’s famous W11
bus becomes a permanent exhibit at Australian Tram Museum. The city lovers can
now take a tour round the old city in a bus through a city tour called “Super
Savari”.
Night life
One of the most interesting features of
Karachi is that it never sleeps. The night life in Karachi is bustling with
activities. The road side joints are crowded with people enjoying chai and
paratha, discussing politics and cricket.
All in all, this beautiful city called
Karachi has a big heart, to accommodate those who come here to find refugee and
seek livelihood. To welcome those in need. To give generously to those who call
it home. If you have lived in this city it will became a part of your life
forever. 💖💖
