The Godzilla of garbage is waiting to swallow Karachi

As I was scrolling through social media today, I was petrified while watching a video shared by Shaniera Akram declaring Clifton beach unsafe (we are thankful to her for her efforts).  The video shows, a kilometer of medical waste, including open syringes, vile of blood samples and other extremely hazardous medical waste  dumped by the beach. Uproar in social media and within hour’s pictures of trucks being pulled up near Clifton beach attempting to clean the piles of garbage were shared.  Post and hash tags of appreciation were being shared for Shaniera Akram and the authorities, who took immediate action, claiming the situation is now under control…….

Is the situation really under control?

The above scenario was from one of the posh area of Karachi, where in broad day light medical waste was dumped and no one saw anything, showing pure negligence of DHA authorities. DHA has never been held accountable for their poor performance or lack of planning. Thankfully Shaniera brought this to the attention of the people but what about the areas where Shaniera Akram can’t reach?

Let’s take a close look at the reality of Karachi. The city has never been the developed metropolis we all dream of; carpeted roads, underground transportation system, malls and sky rise building with power supply, law and order and civilized citizens; all this has become a far-fetch dream that many in this city wish and pray for.
Let’s keep those dreams a side and check the ground realities of this city which is often called the heartbeat of Pakistan. This faint heart beat is struggling on a ventilator to survive, it’s a matter of time when the plug is pulled off and the heart beat will become static. For more than a decade the citizens of this city are demanding their basic rights of clean water, electricity and proper disposal of garbage.
Let’s not even talk about the decaying infrastructure of this city, terrifying lawlessness and lack of basic amenities like hospitals, schools and libraries. Let’s just stick to the basics. Karachi’s ground realities have been consciously ignored by the authorities. The unending fight of many political parties, who claim to own this city, cry day in and day out on national television for lack of funds and resources. If Karachi is the highest revenue generating city in the country then it is criminal not to spend that revenue on the betterment of the city that is generating it in the first place. Where are the funds going? If we all voted for change and firmly believe that the newly elected government is honest and will hold every corrupt member in the chain of control accountable, when will the turn of Karachi come? When will we see serious accountability of the corrupt? For how long will we ignore this by saying that the entire province is run by the most corrupt, when will all this end?

Barish sey pehleye aur Baad:
The aftermath of the much awaited rain has left this city flooded, sewerage water oozing in every corner and the innocent citizens being electrocuted to death.  Even in the so called posh areas of the city where property prices are sky high the authorities were extremely incompetent  and failed to manage the situation.  Garbage has piled up like a monster and no one seems to care, no resignations were given, no emergency changes were made.

Karachi is run by many governing bodies such as Administrators, Municipal commission, Mayor, Cantonment board and Defense Housing Authority are among the few that claim to run this city.  Ironically none of these governing bodies have any plan to run the basic day to day chores of this city, let alone crisis management. The citizens are paying heavy load of taxes, are charged for water, sewage and many other facilities so much so that parking on the side of any road is not free, yet there seems to be no running system or plan working in the city. Currently, more rains are expected in this month and no planning or measures are taken to make the city safe for people. The authorities just don't seem to care.

The heartless people of Karachi:
Last on the list of blame are the people of Karachi, who heartlessly through garbage, spit paan gutka on walls and even excrete on the sides of the roads. After doing all the above, they comfortably sit on their backsides and blame the authorities, thinking they have no hand in the current situation of the city. Whereas, actually, it’s the people who are responsible for the situation, firstly by turning Karachi into a hub of garbage and secondly for staying quiet when the corrupt govern and loot their city. If the people of Karachi don’t take ownership of the city it will remain like this and soon the Godzilla of garbage will swallow us all.

An infidel woman: The scandalous “pink nighty” in ‘Meray paas tum ho’.

Two days back I woke up to see social media upset and demanding PEMRA to ban a play called “M erey paas tum ho ”. The lead actress was trolled for choosing the worst role of her life and much up-roar was made about a “ scandalous pink nighty ” in one of the episodes. Since I had not watched the play I rushed to YouTube to see what the hangaama was about. To my surprise the play had a typical storyline of a middle class government employee Danish (Humanyon Saeed)   with a pretty wife Mehwish (played by Aieza Khan) and a kid, struggling to make ends meet because he is naïve and honest. His wife on the other hand dreams of a better lifestyle with luxuries. A lovable family sets the picture perfect scene of the first episode, till the entry of a rich business man Shahwar played by none other than Adnan Siddiuqi. Shahwar spots Mehwish among common friends and finds her attractive and starts giving her compliments on her beauty, the over possessive husband finds the sitaution

Finally a happy ending for Pyare Afzal

For the past few days the social media is buzzing with the wedding news of Hamza Ali Abbasi of fame Pyare Afzal. Hamza started his career with TV and after doing a few projects moved to the big screen, he is not only famous for the work he did on screen but his claim to fame is from his extremely vocal socio-political and religious views especially on social media, he is seldom politically correct and gets a lot of bashing for his opinions. This week he was again in the news for posts about his wedding announcement to Naimal Khawaar. His long post about “Platonic Relationships” has been the topic  of the grape wine. His definition of Halal relationship was a bit bizarre and was so not needed in the wedding announcement.   Many bashed him for being self righteous or holier than thou. Some called it a publicity stunt, which often the people in the media are accused off.     On August 25 th  2019, the social media was again highlighting his beautiful wedding ceremony; the s

‘The spirit of a WOMAN’

On Sunday, my OCD kicked in and I decided to clean the house. To make cleaning a bit interesting I selected some old classics of Nayyara Noor. I played my favorite song Kabhi Hum bhie khoobsurat theye … … and held on to the magic mop with dear life. Nayyara’s with her soul searching voice sang the beautiful lyrics written by Ahmed Shamim, I could not help ponder upon the simplicity of emotions and the deep sadness  embedded    in the lyrics of this song. I have listen to it a 100 times before, but somehow with age, the meaning of many things have changed so drastically that even I am surprised myself. The song talks about the beauty of emotions more than the physicality of the beauty itself, it emphasizes on the spirit and the joy found in that jubilant spirit. Somehow beauty and age is such an important thing for women, I am not sure if it is a big issue for men also, as their age or beauty is never discussed. But for women it’s a stark reality, we often have t
